Let's face it, we are busy people. We are lucky to get an hour or even 30 minutes in to workout so why not skip out on stretching so we can just got on with our day? WRONG! Stretching is so vitally important to your posture, to elongate your muscles so you can get a full range of motion in with your workout routine and it also increases blood flow.
Even if you don't have time in the morning for your workout, getting in these morning stretches will help revitalize you for the day. Ladies, I love you and I almost understand what you’re describing when you say you'll look bulky if you lift weights, it’s because I know how you look at your body day in and day out. When you strength train regularly your muscles gain shape and tone, that’s what you’re seeing and it looks good! It is actually harder for women to build muscle because they have much lower levels of testosterone – an important muscle building hormone. So ladies, stop worrying about bulking up. Strength training does a body good and you always have the option to use your own bodyweight if weights scare you, but they shouldn’t. What do you say to yourself during your workouts? If your inner dialogue consists of self-defeating talk, you could be sabotaging your results. The opposite also holds true. Here are ways to turn around the most common self-sabotaging statements so you can keep making progress with your workouts.
1) "If I can't do it every yoga move perfectly, I'm a failure" Self defeating talk leads to poor performance. Remember that not everyone starts out as a pro at something, especially a new workout routine. Keep trying, and tell yourself, "I have good points, and bad points. I am no better or worse than anyone else" 2) "my shoulders are my weakest body part" Why are you focusing on your weakest part? Shout "STOP" right now to yourself. Remind yourself that these are just thoughts and carry with you positive self. 3) "This program isn't working..I am not seeing results" first off, how long have you been doing the program? 2 days? Be real with yourself and be GENTLE with yourself when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. Did you know it takes 21 days to form a new habit? In addition to that, giving up on yourself doesn't have anything to do with your body and results, it has to do with your self esteem. Here are some positive affirmations and words you can give to yourself ESPECIALLY when working out: I am taking control of my life I can do this. I believe in myself. I am strong than any excuse This feels good to push my body. With love, Melissa What happens when we compare ourselves to others? I know for me I end up feeling less than and not meeting "the mark" whatever the mark may be. Comparing ourselves to others steals our joy and zest for life. Admiring appreciating someone is different but when we think we are less than, we set ourselves up for self defeating thoughts and behaviors. And when that happens, other things get out of control...food abuse, drug abuse ect...
Below are some practical steps in helping you walk away from comparing yourself with others. Become intimately aware of your own successes. Whether you are a writer, musician, doctor, landscaper, mother, or student, you have a unique perspective backed by unique experiences and unique gifts. You have the capacity to love, serve, and contribute. You have everything you need to accomplish good in your little section of the world. With that opportunity squarely in front of you, become intimately aware of your past successes. And find motivation in them to pursue more. Pursue the greater things in life. Some of the greatest treasures in this world are hidden from sight: love, humility, empathy, selflessness, generosity. Among these higher pursuits, there is no measurement. Desire them above everything else and remove yourself entirely from society’s definition of success. Compete less. Appreciate more. There may be times when competition is appropriate, but life is not one of them. We have all been thrown together at this exact moment on this exact planet. And the sooner we stop competing against others to “win,” the faster we can start working together to figure it out. The first and most important step in overcoming the habit of competition is to routinely appreciate and compliment the contribution of others. Gratitude, gratitude, gratitude. Gratitude always forces us to recognize the good things we already have in our world. Remind yourself nobody is perfect. While focusing on the negatives is rarely as helpful as focusing on the positives, there is important space to be found remembering that nobody is perfect and nobody is living a painless life. Triumph requires an obstacle to be overcome. And everybody is suffering through their own, whether you are close enough to know it or not. Take a walk. Next time you find yourself comparing yourself to others, get up and change your surroundings. Go for a walk—even if only to the other side of the room. Allow the change in your surroundings to prompt change in your thinking. Cheers to you! And Me! For being uniquely and individually made. |
